Weight Loss and Yoga

Weight Loss and Yoga

Millions of people throughout the country struggle with weight loss on a daily basis. If you’re actively working to lose weight then yoga isn’t typically something that you generally associate with weight loss. Instead, gym life is usually where the needle points. The theme of lifting weights, running, working with a personal trainer, or any number of equipment routines are what we typically associate when it comes to lowering the number on the scale. While every person finds a different method that works for their weight loss journey, counting yoga out of the mix shouldn’t happen before you learn more about why practicing yoga may give you more results than you thought were possible.

Specific Classes

In previous articles, we’ve discussed just how many different types of yoga there are. Some yoga is designed to help with pain, some with stress-relief, and other yoga can help kick off your weight loss routine. While yoga isn’t always thought to be a high-energy type of exercise, there are some classes which can help you burn some serious calories while also toning your body. Power yoga, Boot Camp Yoga, and Kick Yo’ Hot Asana (hot yoga) are great classes to take in order to kick off your weight loss goal. Using yoga in combination with more intense exercises such as kickboxing and boot camp is a great mix of “fire and ice”.

Endurance

As anyone having lost weight can tell you, endurance is half the battle. Not letting the little things slow you down and committing to a program is always harder than it sounds. Finding the right regimen for you, finding the right diet, learning more about weight loss in general, and the list goes on. Yoga is a perfect partner to endurance. Yoga presents you with the opportunity to make slow and steady growth. Poses take time to learn and your body slowly gains flexibility. Working on each pose helps you learn both patience as well as endurance that you can take with you and apply towards other areas of your life, such as weight loss.

Perspective

While this tip doesn’t necessarily have to do with the physical aspect of weight loss, it does have bearing on the process as a whole. Yoga is designed to transform you from the inside out. The process of seeing things in a new light lends itself well to your weight loss journey. In difficult times, practicing yoga can give you powerful motivation to move forward despite obstacles in your way. It changes your perspective on goals. While before you may have been easily swayed from your goal during a down period in your life, yoga helps you learn to manage your path forward. Having a positive perspective on weight loss is a big step in working towards where you want to be.
